A quick rant...

Tomorrow is the 4th of July and the impending military parade slash Trump rally in Washington D.C. has me on edge.  I’m not going to go into all the reasons I’m appalled by the current administration - on an almost daily basis - but I will say the following.  Tomorrow, I will celebrate what has made this country ALREADY great for a very long time and that’s the DIVERSITY of its people.

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore."  These words weren’t just inscribed onto a plaque on the Statue of Liberty in the early 1900’s, they serve as a source of inspiration to immigrants arriving in the United States and to people seeking freedom around the world.

To ignore these words, or, in fact, completely defy them with our actions, is the most UN-American thing we can do.  Ours is supposed to be a democracy not only of freedom but of compassion and kindness that fights injustice and oppression.  Ours is supposed to be a country built on the notion of loving thy neighbor and helping those in need.  Ours is supposed to be ONE nation under God…not two hateful factions divided by politics, pettiness and greed.

So, this 4th of July, don’t just put on your star-spangled outfits, eat and drink too much, and blow off fireworks for the kids.  And, for God’s sake, don’t watch that garbage display of authoritarianism on cable tv!  Get outside instead and ENJOY THIS BEAUTIFUL PLANET.  Life is too short to be mad at your friends on Facebook because they’ve let some meme convince them of what’s right and wrong.  WE KNOW in our hearts how to treat people.  Let us just remember it.

Regardless of our gender, sexual orientation, color, religion, party affiliation, etc, etc, etc. We are all HUMAN KIND.  And, we need to be both of those things.
